Appliance burning gaseous fuels - 90/396/EEC

The appliance burning gaseous fuels Directive formulates essential requirements for gas-fired appliances and their components as well as for fan-assisted combustion units and the heating boilers for this. The essential requirements contain general conditions and requirements relating to the materials, design and construction.

The appliance burning gaseous fuels Directive came into force on 1st January 1992 and became a legal obligation on 1st January 1996. From that moment on, no more appliance burning gaseous fuels may be placed on the market or installed without the CE Marking.

The scope of the Directive concerns equipment intended for:

  • cooking, heating, hot-water production, cooling, lighting or washing. Here, the maximum water temperature may not exceed 105 °C;
  • fan-assisted combustion units and heat generators equipped with this kind of combustion unit;
  • security, inspection and regulation equipment and components marketed separately for professional use which are intended for installation in a gas appliance or to be assembled to form a gas appliance.

Appliance burning gaseous fuels intended specifically for industrial processes are not covered by this Directive.
